Hot question

Quit smoking and Gain weight

Publicado:

Q. I'm trying to quit smoking, but I'm afraid of gaining weight. Is it inevitable or is there something I can do to keep my current weight? Thank you, Sergio (California)

A. Hi Sergio! First of all, congratulations for your initiative to stop smoking. Although weight gain is frequent among people who try to do it, it is not inevitable. What I recommend is that you plan your meals ahead, so your eating habits don't change during the process. If you're anxious to grab a bite between meals, look for low-calorie options, such as carrot and celery sticks with lemon juice, light Jell-O cubes, or fresh fruit. If you don't have an exercise routine already, find an activity you like and try to do it at least 30 minutes, five days a week. Exercise will help you burn calories, increase your metabolism, and reduce anxiety or stress. However, at this time, keep in mind that quitting smoking should be your No. 1 priority. I hope I answered your question. Good luck!
